Who has won the Premier League with two different clubs?

Since the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/93, just seven teams have gone on to win the title. They are Manchester Utd, Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Leicester City and Liverpool. Several players have actually won the Premier League with multiple teams though. So who has won the Premier League with two different clubs?

Who has won the Premier League with two different clubs?

Henning Berg (Blackburn & Manchester United)

The first man to achieve the title with multiple clubs was Norwegian defender Henning Berg, who was snapped up by Blackburn Rovers in 1993 by Kenny Dalglish. Kenny who stumped up £400,000 the for the 23-year-old. Berg’s second season at Rovers saw him land his first title, as they pipped Manchester United to the 1994/95 title by a single point.

Berg had long been coveted by Utd boss Ferguson who eventually got his man in 1997, paying what was then a joint British transfer record for a defender – £5m. Berg was a regular for United until the arrival of Dutchman Jaap Stam but still landed two titles at United. So when asking ‘who has won the premier league with two different clubs’, Berg was the first man to do it.

Nicolas Anelka (Arsenal & Chelsea)

Brought to England by Arsene Wenger for £500,000 from PSG in 1997, Nicolas Anelka broke into the Arsenal side when Ian Wright was injured in the 1997/98 season. Lightning quick Anelka would go on to become a key player in the Gunners title challenge, scoring his debut goal at Highbury in a 3-2 victory over title rivals Man Utd.

Moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 1999 with just 2 full seasons at Arsenal under his belt, Anelka became something of a journeyman. He went back to PSG after a year in Madrid, had a loan spell at Liverpool, then moved to Manchester City, Fenerbahce and Bolton. After a 18 months at Wanderers, Chelsea came calling and Anelka would go on to clinch his second Premier League medal in 2009/10, 12 years after his first, as well as winning the Premier League Golden Boot.

Ashley Cole (Arsenal & Chelsea)

The best English left back of the modern era and probably of all time, Ashley Cole was a product of the Arsenal youth academy. Following a successful loan spell at Crystal Palace in 2000, Cole got his chance for Arsenal following an injury to Sylvinho. He seized the opportunity and never looked back. Cole’s first title came in the 01/02 season but it was Arsenal’s Invincibles campaign in 2003/04 when he would secure probably his most precious title.

After a lengthy transfer saga in the summer of 2006, Cole would sign for Chelsea in a deal that saw William Gallas head in the opposite direction. he would go on to win every domestic trophy for the Blues, plus both European trophies, with his second career FA and Premier League double coming in 09/10.

Gael Clichy (Arsenal & Man City)

At 18 years and 294 days, Gael Clichy was the youngest ever recipient of a Premier League winners medal. Plucked from Cannes in the summer of 2003 for a nominal fee, Clichy was brought in as back up to the previous entry on this list. He would make 12 appearances in his first full season at the club, enough to secure a winners medal during the aforementioned Invincibles season.

In 2011, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini paid £7m to bring Clichy to the Etihad and, after a battle with fellow left back Alexandr Kolarov, he eventually managed to dislodge the Serbian and became first choice. Starting City’s historic match against QPR on May the 13th 2012, a win would see City secure their first Premier League title and Clichy’s second. In the most thrilling end to Premier League season to date, Sergio Aguero came through in stoppage time to fire City to glory.

Carlos Tevez (Manchester United & Manchester City)

Carlos Tevez caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson after scoring the winner at Old Trafford to keep West Ham up in the 06-07 season and a deal was agreed for a somewhat complicated 2 year loan. With a respectable return of 14 goals in 34 matches in his first season, Tevez and United won the title and the Champions League. They followed up with another title in in 2008/09, but his relationship with the red side of Manchester became strained and a permanent deal could not be agreed.

It transpired that the ’noisy neighbours’ over at City were plotting a raid for Tevez who became the first player since Terry Cooke in 1999 to cross the divide. Famously City erected a billboard reading ‘Welcome to Manchester’ and showing Tevez in the background. Tevez grabbed his 3rd league winners medal in 2012, but it was to his poorest personal season at the club. His final season at City came in 2012/13 before he signed for Juventus.

Kolo Toure (Arsenal & City)

When asking ‘who has won the Premier League with two different clubs?’ the answer seemingly is anyone who was part of Arsenal’s Invincibles season. The fourth member of that jolly club is Ivorian Kolo Toure. Another bargain buy for Arsenal’s Mr Wenger, Toure cost a mere £150,000 from ASEC Mimosas and would go on to become a key player in 2003/04. Initially playing as a defensive midfielder he eventually moved back into defence and was a key component of the Invincible season.

By 2009, Toure had fallen out of favour at the Emirates and, with a new injection of cash, Manchester City boss Mark Hughes bought him for £14m and immediately gave him the captain’s armband. By the time City won the league in 2011/12, Toure’s role had reduced by with 14 appearances he still qualified for a winners medal.

Mark Schwarzer (Chelsea & Leicester City)

If anyone ever asks you who has won the Premier League with two different clubs but didn’t make an appearance for either, the answer is Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. In his second stint with Chelsea in 2014/15, when Schwarzer was signed as back up, Chelsea landed the league title. Despite making no appearance, Jose Mourinho stated that Schwarzer would receive a replica medal and invited back for the celebration meal such was his popularity and influence in the changing room.

The following season, Schwarzer joined Leicester in another back up goalkeeping role with The Foxes remarkably winning the league. Despite once again not making an appearance, Schwarzer was again awarded a Premier League winners medal, thus becoming the first player since Eric Cantona to win England’s top division with two clubs in consecutive seasons. He holds the record for being the first player to do so in the Premier League era.

Robert Huth (Chelsea & Leicester)

German defending giant Robert Huth join our list of players to win the Premier League at two different clubs and, similarly to the previous entry, he managed it at Chelsea and Leicester. Although a bit part player during Chelsea’s back to back titles in 2004/05 and 2005/06 owing to stiff competition from John Terry, William Gallas and Ricardo Carvalho, Huth made 26 combined appearances across the two seasons thus receiving a winners medal for each.

After plying his trade for the next decade in the winterlands of Middlesbrough and Stoke, he moved to Leicester in 2014 and established himself as a core part of the defense that landed that shock title. He would make 35 appearances for The Foxes meaning there were no question marks over his contribution this time round.

N’Golo Kante (Leicester & Chelsea)

Defensive midfielder Kante was such a huge part of Leicester league title that Chelsea were convinced to pay £32 million for his services in the summer of 2016 and, wouldn’t you know it, he repeated the trick the following season by leading Chelsea to the title this making himself a back-to-back champion for two seperate clubs.

It is a deal that worked out well for absolutely everybody with Kante gettin the move he wanted, Chelsea buying a player who would lead them to silverware and Leicester replacing him with Wilfried Ndidi who some would argue is even better than his predecessor.

Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City & Man City)

Arguably Leicester’s most important player during their run to the title, Mahrez was nominated for the Ballon d’Or and finished seventh for his fantastic efforts. Although unlike Kante he remained with Leicester for a further season, helping them progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League, he eventually signalled his intentions to league the club the following summer and joined Manchester City for a fee of £60m which made him the most expensive African footballer in the world.

It was a decision that Mahrez wouldn’t regret and he won his second Premier League title in addition to the EFL Cup and FA Cup in his first season in Manchester under Pep Guardiola.

James Milner (Manchester City & Liverpool)

The most recent player to win the Premier League with two different clubs is James Milner, one of the greatest free transfers of all time, who accomplished the feat in July 2020 and Liverpool won a historic first ever Premier League title.

The Yorkshireman has enjoyed a hugely distinguished career with spells at Leeds United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United predating a move to Manchester City which is where he pick up his first Premier League title in 2011/12. City would repeat the feat in 2013/4 before Milner moved to Liverpool in 2015.

Originally envisaged as a squad player, he has been a vital component of Jurgen Klopp transforming the Reds into European, World and, now, Premier League champions.
