Late winners for Chelsea and Liverpool help player to £23,903

Top-tier domestic football returned over the weekend and one player scored a massive £23,903 after taking down a Correct Score Pick 4 pool.

The £30 ticket was top heavy, meaning that they had covered multiple selections in the early legs but fewer late on. Were they playing for a Cash Out opportunity?

Alaves vs. Atletico Madrid got the pool underway on Saturday evening and Los Rojiblancos raced to an early two-goal lead thanks to goals from Saul and Diego Costa.

Alvaro Morata made it three without reply in the 59th minute, putting the player in a promising position with 30 minutes to play; they needed Atleti to win by three goals to nil or by ‘Other Away Win’ (ie. the away team score four or more and win the game).

Thomas Partey’s sublime long-range effort in the 84th minute made it four to send the punter safely through to the next leg.

Legs two and three kicked off within five minutes of each other on Sunday afternoon. Seemingly unsure on the match between Roma and Napoli, the player covered a couple of winning scorelines for both sides as well as the goalless draw. Two quickfire goals at the start of the second half gave Napoli and 3-1 lead. Over in Wales, Cardiff got an early second half goal too and took a surprise one nil lead against Chelsea.

Amin Younes secured a second ‘Other Away Win’ selection in the pool as Napoli won 4-1 but it was the late drama at the Cardiff City Stadium that would have shredded the player’s nerves. Cesar Azpilicueta’s 84th minute header was allowed to stand despite the Spaniard clearly being offside. Then, in injury time, Ruben Loftus-Cheek rose to meet a cross from Willian to put Chelsea 2-1 up and give the ticket the kiss of life.

There was still time for Ross Barkley to miss a clear chance to make it 3-1 to Chelsea, which would have eliminated the customer’s ticket from the running!

With three of the four selections locked in, they were assured a Consolation Prize at the very least and this may have swayed them to pass on their Cash Out offer prior to the final leg.

As with the Cardiff vs. Chelsea game, the player was relying on a 2-1 win in Liverpool vs Tottenham, this time in favour of the home team. After a poor start in which they conceded an early goal, Spurs battled back to equalise through Lucas Moura in the 70th minute. Suddenly the player was just a single goal away from glory…

In the 90th minute a deep cross into the box from Alexander-Arnold was turned back across goal by Mo Salah. Hugo Lloris made a mess of of it and Alderweireld turned it into his own net. The Reds won 2-1 and the punter will have been more ecstatic than the Liverpool faithful at the final whistle!

You’ll never walk alone? This player did so to the tune of £23,903.
