Pete O’Rourke Previews the Midweek Pick 15

It’s the final Champions League and Europa League group stage games! Pete O’Rouke has a Syndicate for the midweek Pick 15 kicking off with them.

Here is his reasoning behind a few of the picks in his Syndicate:

Shakhtar v Man City (Tue 19.45)

With Manchester City already qualified and assured top spot in Group F, Pep Guardiola could rotate his squad in the middle of a busy period. That could give Shakhtar the chance to pull off a surprise win to secure their place in the knockout stages.

Prediction: Home Win

Celtic v Anderlecht (Tue 19.45)

Celtic will be aiming to ensure European action after the New Year when they play host to Anderlecht in their Europa League shoot-out. Celtic need only a point to secure third spot in the group, and home advantage should be key for the Scottish champions.

Prediction: Home Win

Benfica v FC Basel (Tue 19.45)

Basel need a positive result away to Benfica to seal their passage into the last 16, with the Portuguese side yet to pick up a point in Group A. With more riding on it for Basel the Swiss outfit can pick up the victory.

Prediction: Away Win

Real Madrid v Dortmund (Wed 19.45)

Dortmund have endured a miserable campaign in the Champions League and, although there is nothing riding on the game for Real, they will be keen to maintain their strong home record in Europe with another victory over hapless Dortmund.

Prediction: Home Win

FC Porto v Monaco (Wed 19.45)

Porto need a win to secure a place in the knockout stages against a Monaco team who are already out. A home win for the Portuguese looks nailed on as Monaco cannot even qualify for the Europa League by finishing third in the group.

Prediction: Home Win

Zulte Waregem v Lazio (Thu 20.05)

Lazio have won the group already and will be aiming to continue their unbeaten record when they travel to already eliminated Zulte. The Italians have been in good form of late and that should continue against the Belgian side.

Prediction: Away Win

RS Belgrade v FC Koln (Thu 20.05)

Both of these sides are battling to finish second in the group behind Arsenal and keep their European campaigns alive. Home advantage could be key for Red Star who have lost only once in the group and should have too much for FC Koln, who are struggling for form.

Prediction: Home Win
